    Atal Tinkering Lab: What it is | Key Features and Projects

    Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) is an initiative the Government of India took to cultivate an innovative mind set amongst school students across the country. They implemented this idea by offering grant-in-aid of up to Rs. 20 lakh for schools across India to successfully set up an Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL), with a one-time establishment cost of INR 10 lakhs and operational expenses of another 10 lakhs. This  would be given for 5 years maximum to each ATL.


    What is Atal Tinkering Lab? 

    As innovation and entrepreneurship have become an integral part of our nation, the scheme enables students to explore new ideas, test them and follow a ‘learning by doing’ approach. Atal Tinkering Lab facilitates projects similar to DIY projects where the students are stimulated to apply the knowledge they have gained in the classroom. 

    The government aspires to ‘create One million children in India as Neoteric Innovators’ with this scheme. Till date, 8878 schools have been selected for establishing ATLs, out of which  3020 have completed their compliance process and have been funded successfully. 

    Atal Innovation Mission is providing young minds with an area to bud and develop skills. The ISRO  adopting ATLs aim to help students develop a flair for space technology and would lead India towards progression.  

    Key features of Atal Tinkering Lab

    • Well-equipped STEM laboratory with latest cutting-edge technology

    Objectives of ATL : 

    1. DIY Projects – ATL would provide ‘do it yourself’ kits and equipment on science, electronics,  robotics, open-source microcontroller boards, sensors and 3D printers and computers.  
    2. Understanding STEM – Young children are given a chance to work with the tools and equipment to understand the concepts of STEM- Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
    3. Targeting Youth – To empower youth with the 21st-century skills of creativity, innovation, critical thinking, design thinking, social and cross-cultural collaboration, ethical leadership etc. 
    4. Economic Growth – To help build innovative solutions for India’s unique problems, thereby supporting the nation’s efforts to grow as a knowledge economy. 
    5. Development – Ensuring students that can join the relevant fields of engineering, science or mathematics are capable of meeting professional requirements of the job. 
    6. Efficiency – The very structure of Atal Tinkering labs allows the students to perfectly blend the left (logical) and right (creative) brain. It helps the students to develop a natural “liking” towards their subjects. 
    7. Other goals of the scheme include inculcating in children a design mind-set, adaptive learning,  computational thinking, physical computing, etc. 
    8. The philosophy behind ATLs is that prize awards and incentives are a great start to generate an aggressive wave of innovation and entrepreneurship in school-going children.

    ATL in MAMS

    The Honorable Governor of the state of Uttarakhand, Smt. Baby Rani Maurya inaugurated the  STEAM lab-MakersSpace at MAMS campus on Tuesday, 27th August 2019 in the presence of  MAMs staff, Senior Management team, Parents, Principals of surrounding areas and several other dignitaries. 

    The opening of the Atal Tinkering Lab is the beginning of a new age at MAM, one that will bring forth a thriving hub of students innovating and creating history for others to imbibe in the future. 

    It’s basically history in the making in the education landscape of the country. Our educational system has placed extensive emphasis upon rote learning and following the stereotyped methods to teach students. ATL is a progressive step in the right direction, which  breaks the conventional and stereotyped ways in which we teach our children. 

    MAMS Director, Arpit Panjwani informed that the lab activities would be facilitated by a full-time faculty member, who is a Teach for India Alumnus and has already been conducting STEM-based workshops for students. The lab will provide students with access to new-age technologies like Arduino programming, 3D Printing, and robotics. Students will get exposure to artificial intelligence, virtual reality, machine learning, and internet-of-things. Inter-school science events, bi-annual science exhibitions, expert talks, and workshops for educators will be organized in the school for more  exposure and to augment a culture of scientific temper and learning.

    MAMs Mission : 

    Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATLs) in schools have been established across India with a vision to  ‘Cultivate one Million children in India as Neoteric Innovators ’by Atal Innovation Mission. The objective of this scheme is to foster curiosity, creativity, and imagination in young minds; and inculcate skills such as design mindset, computational thinking, adaptive learning, physical computing etc.  

    What are we doing? 

    Since its inception, ATL MAMS has been working towards this grand vision and objective. With a keen focus on making the new age technologies like AI, Coding, Robotics and 3D Printing, drones etc accessible to the young innovators from the school and outside school. ATL MAMS has been working towards students getting accustomed to processes like the Design Thinking Process, SWOT Analysis,  Thinking in frames etc. with the innovative curriculum followed. 

    Projects in our ATL Lab

    Full Face Shield Project

    this innovative idea helps fight covid-19 better. This innovation is a 2 in 1 face shield plus mask that can be worn to completely cover the mouth and face of a person. Standard personal protection equipment is extremely expensive and thus unattainable for the general public. We have come up with a simple design that can give a person the benefit of a mask and a face shield at a  fraction of that cost. 

    Early Flood Alarm System

    A typical flood warning system includes a number of items, including automated sensors which are placed in or beside rivers and reservoirs throughout a  designated area. Data is then collected and sent immediately to a base station or personal computer. With this technique, appropriate forecasts are sent to authorities or communities of those potentially affected by the developing flood as soon as possible. 

    LEGO Robotics

    LEGO robotics design, build, and program robots that can take on real-world challenges.  Young designers will learn the basics of robot building, how to control robots using drag and drop coding in the common block palette, and how sensors help robots interact with the world around them. 


    The Future

    Going forward, ATL MAMS is working with Erehwon Orbit Shift Foundation on a pilot program to bring out innovation through a structured curriculum. We are working on creating opportunities for young girls to be part of different STEAM programs in the ATL. We are also working hard on increasing the scale in terms of reaching to all students of the school rather than confining to some interested students.
